FAT: 14 years ago the Surgeon General said that we are too fat. He said America needs to cut the fat out of our diet. I didn’t appreciate that comment even though I lived it.
What happened was a big campaign began to cut the fat out of our diets. We got non-fat this, low-fat that. Diet beer, skinny milk, light margarine and a whole host of other things invaded the marketplace and manufacturers made a killing. So America came to kill FAT.
Well, Food only comes THREE ways…
FAT, Protein, or Carbohydrates are the only ways food comes. Well, if we are going to cut out FAT, then we have to eat something. So we switched a lot of our diets. Instead of Snicker’s and Cake for dinner, we ate more pasta and rice dinners with a lot less butter on it.
We upped the carbohydrate intake in this country and what happened is, as a nation, we are all 71/2 pounds heavier than were 14 years ago. I don’t know about you, but I took more than my share and I am not pleased with the results.
Food is not a love affair!
We love to taste good food – even the healthy stuff. Yet, the food we eat sends messages to our body. Our body burns sugar or glucose. Carbohydrates are easily broken down into glucose. In fact, Carbohydrates are actually storage trucks of glucose.
Now, what does the body do when there are plenty of carbohydrates around to digest??? It decides to store any excess. How does the body store any excess of glucose??? The only way it can, as FAT.
So when you eat the big din-din loaded with Carbohydrates, then the body sends the signal that, “Hey, were going on our sleep cycle, let’s store this up.”
And so the body will inject a little insulin which lets the body know to store this as fat. And nobody argues that anymore.
In Fact, the last 15 diets that have come out in America have all been ANTI-CARBOHYDRATE.
A lot of carbohydrate in your diet will cause you to store that as FAT. So the funny thing is, it’s not the FAT that makes you FAT. It’s the carbohydrates that make you fat.
Now everyone is telling you to cut the Carbs from your diet. Well, if we are reducing FAT and reducing carbohydrates then all we have left is protein.
That can be a scary word in many circles these days with more vegetarians and zealous Vegans combing the social circles. And I offer no offence to people who choose that lifestyle for reasonable health and sanitary reasons.
Yet, not all Protein is the same.
The more amino acids a protein contains, the higher its quality and muscle building ability. The best Amino-filled protein foods are Chicken breast, Turkey breast, Beef (eye round), Salmon, and canned Tuna. Almost all of these are crossed off the true vegetarian diet.
Some people are going to go crazy with all this because it leaves little food left to eat. You can only eat so many vitamins, veggies and nuts; and soy is a low amino protein.
Yet, I think the real measure is to call for balance in our diets.
All the latest diets are calling for a balance with a bit more emphasis on proteins. The diets only really differ on what time of day you eat what.
The rage in this country is to put more protein in your diet.
Yes, more protein – we are all starving for some good protein. Except what… good luck finding anything in today’s market that is not choked full of carbohydrates. And if you are limiting yourself from meats, you will be having even a harder time finding a substitute of low carb. and higher protein.
THE SOLUTION: THANK YOU BILL PHILIPS.
An invention was created called the protein bar.
A man named Bill Philips came along and he created a book called Body for Life. He had his book with pictures of me and compared them with bodies of very muscular men and explained about food and fitness. The book did very well, but that is not where he made his money. He made his fortune selling the food supplements that were high in protein. He recently sold his company for 200 million dollars because they know this is where trends are going to go.
Not bad for a muscle man.
His latest book, the Better Life Body is much simpler, a lot smaller and more easily understood. The focus is to change the way you live your life and the way you eat things for the rest of your life.
With his protein bar he revolutionized the way people could find a good balance between their FAT, carb. and protein foods. A survey found half the people who regularly attended gyms were doing the Bill Philips program. Unfortunately, most people were not eating Bill Philips’ protein bar, but switching between many competitors because they all taste terrible.
In fact, they taste like the cardboard box they came in.
The reason these protein bars are so horrible is because there is no sugar in them. We Americans are addicted to sugar. People say they like Heinz ketchup because it tastes so much like a tomato. Wrong, they like the taste because a third of ketchup is sugar.
I like BBQ sauce, but half of most BBQ sauces are sugar. Now when we get to Krispe Kreme donuts or Cinabuns we know God has blessed America, because we can eat more calories in a sitting than we should eat in a day or two.
The point here is not to go overboard one way or the other. Remember we want – or need – a balance in our diet. Not that a dozen Krispe Kreme donuts won’t balance my last few years of sugar watching – no, don’t do that. And don’t give up on Protein bars just yet, finish this letter.
What we need is to move to five or six meals a day. Not the same size as the three meals we eat now – but the whole idea is to not be hungry. What happens when we are hungry is the body sees a famine and begins storing sugars as fat… just in case.
TORTURE THROUGH HUNGER IS NOT HOW YOU LOSE WEIGHT
If you get hungry during the course of a day, you don’t need a full meal, but a half of a protein bar would be wonderful. In fact, by taking a protein bar when hungry, you are telling the body it’s fed, and if it doesn’t want to spend all the hard work breaking down the protein, then it can sure start eating away at some fat. In this way you actually can lose fat during a resting period.
The same works for bedtime. If you stuff yourself with pie and ice cream before bed you are sending a message to your body to conveniently store this in fat capsules. Your body is responding, “Okay, we’ll get this stuff stored away for you while you sleep.” That is not what you want.
Take a piece of protein bar before bed and the body will burn fat while you sleep. How does that sound to you? You can’t afford to have a love affair with food. Food is a message to your body. Be careful what you are telling it to do.
